I have MS and have been taking LDN for over two years with great success. My 2 year old german shepherd has been battling uncontrollable diarrhea for the last year and the vet has finally narrowed it down to IBS. He is giving him a combination of steroids (low dose), tylan and chinese meds with only mild success. It struck me since IBS is considered autoimmune- would LDN perhaps help him. The other question would be what dose (my dog is 60-65 lbs) and getting a script for him as well. Any feedback??

Here's how to adjust for a child and same can be done with animals. Get liquid LDN with a dropper and lightly sweeten with stevia to kill bitterness. Give dog probiotics also. He may need a parasite cleanse/detox Low Dose Naltrexone Forum - Dr. Bihari/how to adjust LDN for a child ldn.proboards3.com/index.cgi?board=links&action=display&n=1&thread=743

It has now been a month since I started giving my dog LDN for Inflammatory Bowel Disease which the vet told me was an autoimmune disease. Since my vet was not familiar with LDN nor willing to give me a script for it, I got the 50 mg tablets from India without a script and have been giving him 2 mg each night. His chronic diarrhea is gone, he has put on weight, his appetite is fantastic for the first time in 1 1/2 years, he is playfull and in great health. LDN has done what my vet was not able to do in the last 18 months. Not to mention that he was on 4 different medications as well as chinese herbs. I just wanted to pass this info on to anyone that may be having trouble with their pets to consider LDN - for anything considered autoimmune .

Great news. Did you use these liquid LDN mixing instructions with your dog?
Liquid LDN: Acquire some ml measuring equipment from the baby section of a Drug Store and a small bottle with a screw-on cap. Put 50ml of water (distilled is best) and one 50mg "ReVia" Naltrexone tablet in the small bottle and let it dissolve with a little time and shaking. Now each ml of water in that small bottle contains 1 mg of Naltrexone. At bedtime shake the bottle, take a desired dose (no more than 4.5ml), chase it down with some water and store the small bottle in the refrigerator. Some people have reported splitting the tablet in half and dissolving it in 25ml of water to assure freshness every week.

Yes those are the instructions I followed. I mix 25 mg up at a time. It is very easy to give to my dog- and I use the Stevia to sweeten it- he doesn't mind it at all. This is so much more economical - the meds and special foods we were giving him from the Vet were costing us between $400 - $600 a month (which varied depending on whether he had a vet visit and/or tests that month). He is now on a good grade dog food. Again, thanks for all the great info that is always available on this board. Not a day goes by without my checking in. In another month or so when I see my vet next - I am hoping after seeing the success with my dog - he will be interesting in finding out more about LDN and hopefully using it to treat other pets in his care. Yours will definitely be a link I give him to educate himself about LDN.

hi beanfish, I am treating my GSD with ldn for DM. Started tx 1 week ago and my dog is improved in symptoms remarkably. We are very hopeful. Hardly any info out there on this tx for this diagnosis, and the DM boards I've been to appear to find it pretty controversial. Would love to hear how it goes with you if you do decide to try it. Contact me privately if you care to although I think the more this gets public awareness, maybe it will be more helpful. j

Hi J
Thanks for your reply. I have an ex-racing Greyhound who I think has DM, not confirmed, but quite likely. I was very interested in hearing about ldn and if it was being used for dogs with any success. So far I have heard of very few people using it, but when they are they seem to be getting good results. I would like to hear about doses etc and where you got the ldn. I live in Melbourne Australia, so I may have some trouble.

Hi jmrusa. Do you mind sharing your dog's weight and dosage? I've asked my vet to prescribe LDN for my dog, who weighs 52 lbs.
Thanks, Aileen

Hi Aileen, Jake is 92 lbs and I started him on 3mg as he was under 105 lbs. However, for the last 2 nights I have upped his dose to 4.5mg because Jake also has perianal fistula and I am hoping for some improvement. jackie

Aileen, Brenda posted this in reply to a question about ldn in kids & animals :
Dr. Bihari's approach to use of LDN in children has apparently been effective -- the LDN dose is reduced proportional to the childs's weight. Thus a 60 pound child would receive about one-half the adult dose: 2mg each night at 9pm, try 10pm during Daylight Saving Time(spring/summer) in USA to be on the safe side.

My dog has been diagnosed with cancer and I had my vet give me a prescription. He was wonderful about it!! He wrote it for 4.5 MG at bedtime. However, when I had it filled at the pharmacy he said that is a large amount for such a small dog. I have a 13 pound miniature Schnauzer. I read on one site that this guys dog was cured of cancer and the Vet told him dogs require more than adults. However, this vet talked me in to filling them with only 1.0 MG caps. I said ok, he called my vet and had the script changed accordingly. I called another pharmacy that fills this for dogs and he said the 4.5MG would not hurt my dog, but since she is small maybe go with 1.5MG. I have her on the 1.0 MG. The script label says that the most effective results from these meds and that is relating to humans is 1.5MG - 4.5 MG. Anything over or below did not show results.
Can anyone help me here.....Do I need to give her 2MG's per night? Or since she is so small will the 1MG caps be effective for her?? I have no problem giving her another caplet. However, these big dogs I read about at 90lbs up are only getting like 3.0 MGs. I read on one site it said 1.0 mg per 30lbs and one site said 1.0 mg per 50 lbs. However, I think this pertains to humans.
Can anyone help me here?? I want to do right by my dog? SHould I keep the little girl on 1.0 MG or increase it to 2.0 MG???

I am having trouble finding a vet in the Spokane Washington area that knows anything about LDN. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can obtain this without an rx from a vet? I have an 80lb golden with cancer.

Brenda, Thank you for your help. Because of your links, I have a vet that was willing to do some research and also talked to skips pharmacy. My golden with cancer has been on LDN for a week now. I can't believe how great he is acting! New energy, appetite, and happy! And so far we have had no diarrhea problems. I know this is an on going process for now, but I am so grateful! Thank you so much.

This place has Low dose Naltrexone in capsules which is 4.5 mg's. This place delivers super fast. They are Antiaginginternational They sell 30 4.5 Low dose Naltrexone for $49.99. Just make sure you start out on maybe 1 mg. of it to see how the dog reacts, then slowly start raising the dose. Naltrexone could be dangerous if over dosed on. But if your dog has cancer then you should find out more info to give you hope & maybe try it. www.antiaging-systems.com/iasstore/acatalog/naltrexone.html

My daughter has been on LDN for the past 2 years for ulcerative colitis. I discovered LDN on the internet and talked her MD into prescribing. It has been working great to decrease her symptoms. My dog now has cancer and just undergone surgery. Once she is off narcotic type pain meds I am starting her on LDN (use while on narcotics is contraindicated). She weighs 36lb. and I am starting her on 1mg. I am the pharmacist and owner of Bacon East Pharmacy. My email is baconeast.com and ask for Terry. Our phone # is 925-687-0565. The price for a 30 day supply is about $35. There are discounts for higher quantities. I have several adult patients using LDN successfully.
